The Role of the Teacher and Mentor
Ashland University is a teaching university with a commitment to
scholarship and research. As a teaching university we strive for
excellence in the classroom as well as modeling character and mentoring
students in and out of the classroom setting. The University’s
commitment to “Accent on the Individual” is not an outdated
slogan but a lifestyle that emphasizes personal engagement in the
hearts and minds of students.
The Taylor Teaching Award is presented each year
to faculty who espouse:
- One who challenges and supports students to excel
- One who personifies “Accent on the Individual”
- One who fulfills the faculty member profile
- One who stays current on theories and practices in both pedagogy
and discipline related items
- One who students often mention positively for classroom teaching
- One who is willing to devote time and energy to incorporate
innovative practices for improved instruction in the classroom.
The Academic Mentor
Award is presented each year to faculty, staff or an academic
administrator who serve as role models.
A mentor is defined as a person who serves as a role model, trusted
advisor and guide to another individual and significantly affects
that person’s life beyond the classroom. The educational experience
of the student is materially enhanced when a faculty/student mentor
relationship is established and maintained.
