Internship Information

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities, which provide them with experiential learning and academic credit.  Work sites include, but are not limited to, mental health centers, alcohol rehabilitation centers, counseling centers, summer camps, hospitals, group homes, autism clinics, and schools for children with developmental delays.  While there are numous sites in the Ashland area, students also have the opportunity to do internships in their home communities.  Dr. Curt Ickes, Associate Professor of Psychology, is the director of the internship program, and questions should be directed to him.

Internship Description (as taken from the college catalog):

PSYC 393/493 ELECTIVE INTERNSHIP

Prerequisites: GPA of at least 3.0; permission of department and acceptance of work site; Learning Contract completed and turned in to the Career Development Center before taking or registering for the internship.

Provides psychology majors experiential learning within various social service agencies and work settings related to the student's career interests under the supervision of an onsite coordinator.  This offering may be repeated up to a total of 6 credit hours with permission of the student's advisor and the department chair.  These credits cannot be used as substitutes for the required psychology course credits as identified in the catalog.

Eliada Homes, Inc., located in Asheville, North Carolina, has been serving children and families for a century. As we enter our second century of service we are launching RISE, Residential Interns Seeking Excellence, a program for highly qualified and enthusiastic professionals who are interested in building a career in service to children and families. We are interested in men and women with diverse educational and professional backgrounds. Although academic excellence
is admirable, we are more interested in candidates who have chosen service-oriented internships, professional positions, and volunteer activities.
Each candidate will spend a year rotating through each of the five service areas offered.
Service areas include:
* Level IV residential treatment
* Boys level III residential treatment
* Girls level III residential treatment
* Level III coed latency program
* Horizons Academy (day treatment junior and senior high private school)
All of these positions are direct care working with children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses and will provide the RISE intern with experiences in treatment planning and implementation, documentation, family/team processes, case management, crisis
management, and permanency planning. Each intern will be provided housing on our campus in West Asheville, some meals, all utilities except cable and telephone, all full-time employee benefits, and wages of $5.15/hour.   Eliada does not permit smoking, tobacco products, or alcohol on our campus. The Mental Health America Resource Development department offers interns the opportunity to support corporate, foundation and individual fundraising efforts.  Development interns research potential targets, track foundation activity and outreach efforts, draft communications (including letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and personal correspondence), and work across all MHA programs and departments to seek funding to support our vital mission.  Only creative, organized and ambitious individuals need apply.
