Public Lecture: Freedom isn't Free-The Nonviolent War on Terror in Mississippi, 1963-1967 Speakers George and Louise Smith were civil rights workers in Meridian, Mississippi, from 1963-1967. George Smith was friends and colleagues with Michael Schwerner and James Chaney, two of the activists murdered by the Ku Klux Klan in 1964 -- events later portrayed in the movie Mississippi Burning. George and Louise Smith witnessed many of the key historical moments of the civil rights movement. In addition to their work for CORE in Mississippi, they were in the march from Selma to Montgomery and the Meredith March Against Fear. Now living in Fort Wayne, IN, the Smith’s are currently involved in the campaign finally to bring the murderers of Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney to justice. Hawkins-Conard Student Center View Map
