Course Title:               Seminary Course in Christian History, Theology, and Philosophy

 

Department: Religion

 

Credit Hours:   Three

 

Prerequisites:   Junior or senior status; at least a 3.0 G.P.A.; instructor permission; permission of Religion Department chair.

 

 

1. Catalog Description

“Seminary Course in Christian History, Theology, and Philosophy” provides an opportunity for a student to take an approved course in historical, theological and/or philosophical studies at Ashland Theological Seminary. Open only to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Requires written permission from the chair of the Religion Department and the instructor of the seminary course.

 

2. Course Content:

The exact course content will depend upon the course. The course will involve graduate level study within the areas of Christian history, theology, and philosophy. Representative courses include, but may not be limited to:

              AP 630 History and Thought of the Christian Peace Movement

CT 640 Varieties of Early Christian Thought

CT 623 Theology of Luther and Calvin

CH 640 Christianity in the Southern Hemisphere

CP 722 Ethics of Church and Society

CP 531 Philosophy of Religion

             

 

  3. Student Learning Objectives:

  1. The overall objective of this program is for students to have an opportunity to do more advanced and concentrated work in the areas of Christian history, theology and philosophy than they can achieve at the undergraduate level.
  2. Student will improve their ability to read and understand primary source works in Christian thought. Emphasis will be given to the close, careful reading of primary source materials.
  3. Students will improve their research and writing skills in theology and Christian history through written assignments and research projects.
  4. Students will gain exposure to graduate level work in Christian thought.
  5. Students will gain the ability to identify and employ the key methods for the study of Christian theology, history, and philosophy.

 

4. Student assessment criteria

Assessment criteria will vary depending upon course. The following are criteria that would be used in most classes.

•  Written assignments, including short essays and term papers.

•  Class participation

•  Exams and quizzes.  

 

5. Resource Materials

              Dependent upon course.

 

6. Instructional Approach

              This depends upon the course. However, all of the courses we are suggesting focus upon close, careful reading of primary sources with an emphasis on class discussion and active learning.
