Course Title:   “ Seminary Course in Practical Theology”

 

Department: Religion

 

Credit Hours:   Three

 

Prerequisites:   Junior or senior status; at least a 3.0 G.P.A.; instructor permission; permission of Religion Department chair. .

 

 

1. Catalog Description

Seminary Course in Practical Theology provides an opportunity for a student to take an approved course in Christian ministry or practical theology at Ashland Theological Seminary. Open only to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Requires written permission from the chair of the Religion Department and the instructor of the seminary course.

 

2. Course Content:

The exact course content will depend upon the course. The course will involve graduate level study within the area of practical theology. Representative suggested courses include, but may not be limited to:

  CE 722: “Advanced Youth Ministry”

  CM 501: “Music in Worship, Education, and Evangelism”

  CE 511: “Ministry to Students in the Church”

  CE 514: “Educational Programming for the Family”

 

  3. Student Learning Objectives:

  1. The overall objective of this program is for students to have an opportunity to do more advanced and concentrated work in the areas of practical theology.
  2. Student will begin to master the theories and approaches to Christian education, counseling, evangelism, youth ministry or other areas of practical ministry.
  3. Students will develop the skills necessary to engage in practical theology.
  4. Students will gain exposure to graduate level work in practical theology.
  5. Students will gain the ability to identify and employ the key tools and methods for the study and practice of Christian worship, education, evangelism, ministry and/or church development.

 

4. Student assessment criteria

Assessment criteria will vary depending upon course. The following are criteria that would be used in most classes.

•  Written assignments, including short essays and term papers.

•  Class participation

•  Exams and quizzes.  

 

5. Resource Materials

              Dependent upon course.

 

6. Instructional Approach

              This depends upon the course. However, all of the courses we are suggesting focus upon close, careful reading of primary sources with an emphasis on class discussion and active learning.
