Dean's Message

Dr. James Maxwell

Welcome to the Richard E. & Sandra J. Dauch College of Business and Economics.

In today’s business world success depends on finely tuned performance and on the development of can-do individuals who consistently drive results. To be a front runner, you must maneuver the upturns and downturns of the world marketplace with speed and decisiveness. It helps to have a road map and an experienced crew to get you where you want to go. The Dauch College of Business and Economics will provide you with the tools and knowledge to be successful in the transnational business world in the 21st century.

Our longstanding reputation for outstanding business and management education comes from our unique combination of highly accomplished researchers, professors, and students; tailored curriculum; and strong sense of community.

Ashland University’s small size allows for a deeper level of interaction, participation, and program customization, which, in turn, fosters key relationships that provide endless opportunities for continuous achievement. We equip high-potential students with the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to become leaders in a time of intense competition and global change.

The Dauch College of Business & Economics offers many learning benefits and opportunities for our students inside and outside the classroom including:

  • 9 majors and 11 minors
  • Certification preps such as the CPA/Series VII
  • Internationally and nationally recognized speakers
  • Alumni network that yields prestigious job placements
  • Real life projects in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
  • Investment skills taught in the prestigious Conard Center for Financial Education
  • Research assistants through the BEST Scholars program
  • Grants for publications and conference attendance
  • Specialized College of Business & Economics Writing Fellows
  • Award-Winning student organizations
  • Internships for credit

Our students are required to complete internships with outstanding employers ranging from American Axle to Smuckers (one of America's best companies to work for). It is not uncommon for us to receive written feedback such as; the intern’s research skills, phone skills, and business knowledge are exceptional.

When you tour the building, be sure to look for the hallway that is dedicated to honoring the published works of our students. You will discover that a school dedicated to excellence in teaching also excels in providing students means, tools, and opportunities for scholarship even at the beginning stages of their academic careers. Professors collaborate with students on their scholarship. Our undergraduate and MBA students have published papers in well respected journals and presented their work at regional, national, and international conferences. A collaborative paper is even on its way to winning a distinguished paper award by a journal.

In addition, our students excel through participation in the activities of many professional student organizations. Almost every major has a related student organization. Recently a team of four business students placed first in a regional financial planning competition. In 2008, the Students In Free-Enterprise (SIFE) team competed nationally and has often placed among the top teams regionally on an annual basis. The accounting students through IMA are involved in various professional activities that allow them to network with professionals in the big name accounting firms and corporations. These organizations are very effective vehicles for our students to develop leadership skills and build relevant career skills and know-how.

Building workplace skills among our students is an important component of our curricula. Communication skills, specialized knowledge, and ethics and integrity are college level competencies that we measure in a value-added fashion through a portfolio approach. We use outside experts in a programmatic way to help us assess the students' development in the areas of verbal, written, and interviewing skills. Our students perform above national norms in the Educational Testing Services' measurement of their knowledge of various business disciplines.

I invite you to visit us on campus. You may be amazed by how much more we have to offer than what is described here. This is just a beginning. Welcome to a wonderful journey.

Please feel free to contact me anytime!

Sincerely,
