Internship Program FAQ's

FAQs about the COBE’s Internship Program
Presentation by K. Pittenger
August 21, 2007

What does an employer need to provide a student?

  • A list of meaningful job responsibilities especially special projects.
  • A formal supervisor who is willing to oversee the work of the student to:
    • Sign the learning contract & help achieve its objectives.
    • Complete and mail two evaluations.
    • Provide materials for the internship portfolio.

What are the qualification criteria for the students?

  • GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Full time AU student status for at least a year.
  • A declared business major or minor.
  • Internship involving a minimum of 225 hours.

How does a student get academic credit for the internship?
Student is required to:

  • Collect internship paperwork on our web or from Dr. Symons.
  • Make an appointment with Dr. Symons to complete the Learning Contract. This contract is signed by the student, student’s supervisor and Dr. Symons.
  • Return the completed Liability Release Form and a copy of the Learning Contract to Dr. Symons before the start of the internship.
  • Take the Learning Contract to the Registrar’s office to register for the agreed on course number and elective.
  • Submit student and supervisor evaluations during the internship.
  • Submit the internship portfolio with the agreed on elements to Dr. Symons by the deadline.

Download forms here.

How many internships can a student do?

  • Three: One for the major, one for the minor and one for general business. Accounting is an exception.

Does the internship have to be paid/unpaid?

  • It can be paid or unpaid. We encourage paid internships.

Does the internship cost a student?

  • It depends. It is like a regular course. When students register for it during summer, it costs them 3 credit hours worth of tuition. If they register for it in the fall or spring and keep it under 18 credit hours or fewer, then the comprehensive fee covers it.

When can students do the internship?

  • Any semester – fall, spring or summer

Can a student intern with his/her family’s business?

  • Yes as long as all the requirements are met.

Does it have to be a formal internship program?

  • No. A student’s regular work can be turned into an internship with the employer’s cooperation.
