1. Catalog description:

Introduction to the application of computers in the hospitality industry.  A study of how computers are used in hotels and restaurants for controlling reservations, making room assignments, helping track of food and beverage charges, forecasting, and scheduling.  The course will serve as a foundation for integrating computer usage in other hospitality curriculum.  Special emphasis will be directed to computerized front office operation.

2. Course content:

Course content will include information on the organization of various hospitality businesses.  Property management systems will encompass all aspects of the front office position including: guest registrations, guest charges, check-out and the night audit.   Other areas of study will include: training and promoting in-house sales, effective in interdepartmental communications and security issues.  A hands-on project will be completed requiring a visitation to a hospitality entity.

3. Student learning objectives:

Specialized knowledge--This course will cover different aspects of the hospitality industry.  A basic understanding of terminology and day-to-day operations will be discussed.

Managerial thinking skills--Students will be expected to identify relevant information and take action to solve day-to-day problems.

Communication skills--students must rely on excellent communications skills to be successful in this service related industry with high customer contact.  Both customer service and interdepartmental communication will be discussed.

Accountability and integrity--Students will have an understanding of setting high standards, being proactive and exercising self-discipline and understanding the consequences of uncompleted assignments.

4. Student assessment criteria:

Students will be assessed on their specialized knowledge based on tests over the chapters and outside readings.  Managerial thinking skills will be assessed through written cases, and application of the computer property management simulation.  Communication skills will be assessed through class participation, computer accuracy, written assignments and their interviewing skills during their property visitation.  Students will have an opportunity to under accountability and integrity consequences when assignments are not turned in on the scheduled date.
