1. Catalog description:
A survey which aims to familiarize students with accepted management theory as
well as contemporary thinking that might challenge the assumption forming the
foundation of traditional management practices. Students will learn the management functions of planning, organizing,
leading and controlling in the context of a changing global environment and
explore ethical issues facing managers working with today’s diverse
workforce.
2. Course content:
General Introduction to the profession of
management and its history.
Current issues in management such as globalization, diversity management and ethical foundations.
Foundations of planning and decision making
Basic organizational design and structure
Staffing and human resource management
Individual and group behavior and team management.
Motivation and leadership
Control, operations management and quality management.

Student learning objectives:
The
students are expected to:
1. learn the application of fundamental and essential management theories, concepts, tools and skills traditionally used by effective managers.
2. learn about the nature and complexity of managerial work as it is affected by the changing global environment and other issues facing the managers today.
3. learn how to be “self learners.”
4. practice creativity in demonstrating the understanding of the managerial concepts.
5. gain better insight into their own skills, abilities and interests as they relate to the management profession.
Course Competencies: This course will address the following three college level Competencies:
1. Specialized business knowledge: includes knowledge of key definitions, terms, concepts, tools and skills related to basic management functions and their execution. These will be assessed through quizzes and examinations.
2. Communication Skills: includes written communication skill. It will be assessed through case studies, essay exam and class discussions.
3. Managerial Thinking Skills: Includes ability to apply the appropriate concepts and tools to diagnose and address real life situation or case studies. It will be addressed through case analyses.
In addition, the course will emphasize the following major and course level competencies:
4. Team Work & creativity: a group project will be used to develop this competency.
5. Professionalism: includes integrity, accountability, setting high standards, being pro-active and exercising self-discipline. Interaction with classmates, the professor and other behavior in the classroom and related to the course will be used to address this competency.
