1. Catalog description: The management of complex organizations requires an understanding of the nature of human behavior in manufacturing, service, and government organizations, styles of motivations, company leadership, power and authority, strategies of organizational design and change, teamwork and collaboration, and the measurement of organizational effectiveness.

Students will study how human behavior has a direct impact upon a business organization. Interacting with other people and in organizations is characterized by complex dynamics. This course is designed to help students study these very interesting complexities by both analyzing and considering these dynamics. Students will learn these management concepts by directly participating in a number of learning activities. The combination of academic perspective and personal engagement creates a powerful learning experience.

3. Student learning objectives:

  1. Apply different concepts related to organizational behavior and human perception.
  2. Define the purpose and nature of the field of organizational behavior
  3. Differentiate between the dominant perspectives in the field of organizational behavior
  4. Differentiate between various types of behavior modification theories and techniques
  5. Identify specific actions managers can take to motivate employees
  6. Analyze different concepts related to leadership and decision making
  7. Apply different concepts related to managing conflict, stress, and communication.

4. Student assessment criteria: This course relies on a variety of assignments in exploring Organizational Behavior including various readings, both on-line and in the textbook, exams, writing assignments, discussions.

5. Additional information (optional):
     Students will utilize an interactive computer simulation CD. The Manager’s Workshop is designed to enhance student understanding of motivation theories and how they can be applied to manage “Real World” employee performance problem. It does so by providing a highly interactive simulation that places students in the role of a manager who must make a series of decisions about how to handle very different types of performance issues across a group of five sales people. These types of learning experience enables students to think and act like managers and to appreciate the practical value of motivation theories at a higher level of mastery.
