Welcome from the Dean - College of Education

Welcome From The Dean
James Van Keuren
Dr. James Van Keuren
Dean, Schar College of Education

Welcome to the Dwight Schar College of Education:

As the new Dean of the Dwight Schar College of Education, I am honored to serve the college and university. We have a proud history of academic accomplishments in the college, which we will continue to build on in the ensuing years.

We are most fortunate to have a physical facility that has the state of the art technology and classroom resources. Our faculty members and staff are dedicated to providing a positive learning environment by targeting instructional delivery strategies and services to meet the various learning styles of the students.

The Dwight Schar College of Education is a comprehensive college having more than 30 licensure programs and 20 majors, and offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Our students stand among the top achievers in the state, having an average passage rate on the state mandated Praxis series test of 95 to 97 percent.

The College has more than 65 full-time faculty members with the majority having their doctoral degree. The academic programs are delivered at Ashland and through its other four centers in Cleveland, Columbus, Elyria and Massillon.

This academic year we will focus on the following student areas:

  • Are we prepared to meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate 21st Century student?
  • Assess what students Should Know, Be Able To Do, and Be Like
  • Add to the college’s website interactive student comments about the collegiate experience
  • Creation of a Dean’s Student Advisory Committee
  • Promotion of student-faculty research collaboration
  • Creation of more opportunities for students to study abroad
  • Start to engage students in virtual learning environments
  • Collaborate with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Business on program development

Our faculty and staff are dedicated to placing the Accent on the Individual by providing a positive collegiate experience for both the undergraduate and graduate students. This approach ensures that every student receives a quality academic experience that they will remember the rest of their lives. Explore our website to view a vibrant college and university pushing the envelope to meet learning needs of the 21st Century student.
