Early Childhood Undergraduate Majors
Ashland University's Department of Early Childhood offers two
initial licensure programs that prepare students to work
with children in preschool through grade three.
Bachelor of Science in Education with a Comprehensive Major
in Early Childhood Education
This licensure program is for students who want to work with children in preschool through grade three. Employment opportunities include teaching in public and private classrooms, Head start, and other preschool programs. Educators who have earned this license are able to work with young children who are typically developing or have mild to moderate needs.
In addition to successfully completing required coursework and an exit portfolio, students must also take the following licensure exams and meet state-mandated scores:
• Principles of Learning & Teaching test: Early Childhood (Test 30521)
• Education of Young Children (Test 20021)
Early Childhood Academic Plan includes a suggested four-year plan.
Bachelor of Science in Education with a Comprehensive Major
in Early Childhood Intervention Specialist
This licensure program is for students who want to work with young children in preschool through grade three who have special needs. Graduates of this program may teach in pre-kindergarten through grade three classrooms or programs with young children who have moderate to severe needs. Additionally, they may work closely with these children's caregivers.
In addition to successfully completing required coursework and an exit portfolio, students must also take the following licensure exams and meet state-mandated scores:
• Principles of Learning & Teaching test: Early Childhood (Test 30521)
• Special Education: Knowledge-Based Core Principles (Test 20351)
Note: The Special Education exam has been designed for individuals who are preparing to teach children in preschool through grade 12.
