Frequently Asked Questions

Is it very expensive to study abroad?

The cost of each study abroad program is calculated individually and includes expenses such as tuition, room and board, transportation, etc. The average tuition, room, and board costs for one semester abroad is between $5,000 and $7,000. Although Ashland University scholarships cannot be used, federal and state aid can be applied toward the cost of your desired study abroad program.

Do I have to arrange my own housing and dining?

All study abroad programs offered by Ashland University provide a housing plan, which may include a room with a host family, an apartment, or a residence hall. Dining services vary with each program.

Will my credit hours transfer?

With pre-planning, study abroad credit hours will transfer to Ashland University either as major, minor, or institutional requirements.

Will I graduate on time if I study abroad?

With help from the Registrar and your academic advisor, you are able to adjust your four-year plan to include a study abroad experience. Generally, students are encouraged to take classes that will fulfill their AU institutional requirements. These classes typically transfer easily to AU and allow students to graduate in four years.

Do I have to be fluent in another language to study abroad?

While some programs require language ability, Ashland University also offers programs that are taught in English. There are several program options that do not require foreign language proficiency.

Is it difficult to apply for a study abroad experience?

The Global Education Office will assist you with your study abroad preparation, which includes choosing an appropriate program that fits your interests and needs, applying for your program and preparing you for your experience with a pre-departure orientation.
