Preparing the best educators
At the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University, we are on a mission to prepare the very best type of educator: one who understands the nature of learning, values teamwork and collaboration, embraces social and cultural diversity and eagerly anticipates all of the exciting challenges that the education profession brings.
As one of Ohio’s premier university in the preparation of professional educators, we enroll approximately 850 undergraduate students and 2,100 full- and part-time graduate and post-baccalaureate students every year at our state-of-the-art main campus facilities in Ashland and four regional program centers in Columbus, Cleveland, Elyria, and Massillon/Stark. On the average, we recommend more than 1,000 teachers and administrators for licensure or endorsements every year.
We offer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees for teachers, administrators, and human resources personnel. We have more than 30 program areas within our degree, post-baccalaureate (Bachelor's Plus) initial teacher licensure, and licensure and endorsement programs that span across seven departments. The College has more than 65 full-time faculty housed within its seven departments; most have their doctoral degree and K-12 teaching experience, as appropriate to their areas of expertise.
The College offers students value-added experiences for its students:
- In addition to our four-year program at the Ashland campus, undergraduate students may begin their programs at local community colleges and complete their degrees at the Ashland campus, the Elyria Center’s 2+2 Program or the Columbus Center’s Bachelor’s Completion program.
- Students enrolled in our undergraduate and Bachelor’s Plus programs have opportunities to spend six weeks of their internship experiences in the southern United States through the Southern Internship Program (SIP) or at an international English speaking school through the Consortium of Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program.
- Many graduate courses are available through hybrid (face-to-face and online) formats – a growing number of the classes are available totally online.
- Doctoral students have cohorts of no more than 15 students.
- With recent travels to Taiwan, Sweden, Brazil, Germany, Latvia, Ireland, Canada, France, and England, our well-traveled faculty bring broader cultural perspectives and experiences to their teaching.
We have been continuously accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) at both the basic and advanced levels for more than 35 years. Our students stand among the top achievers in the state, and have an average passing rate of 95% to 97% on the state-mandated PRAXIS series test, required for teacher licensure in Ohio.
