Ashland University kicker Austin
Wellock is a redshirt freshman, but his name is making the
rounds in NCAA Division II football.
Saturday (Oct. 5) at Wayne State University,
Wellock kicked six field goals in six tries and added an extra
point as Ashland won for the first time this season, stopping the
Warriors, 25-20. Wellock had field goals from 28, 35, 32, 37, 31
and 23 yards. His day places him in some very special company.
- Wellock now shares the NCAA Division II
record for field goals in a game with Steve Huff of Central
Missouri. Huff was 6-for-6 against Southern Missouri State in
1985. Huff had field goals of 37, 45, 37, 24, 32 and 27 yards.
- Wellock is this weeks Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference special teams player of the
week. He now holds the GLIAC record for field goals in a game.
The old record of five field goals was held by four players,
including former AU kicker Matt Pifer. Pifers five-field
goal day at Mercyhurst in 2000 was the Ashland school record
before Wellocks six-field afternoon at Wayne State.
Wellock is 9-for-9 on field goal tries this
season. Hes 9-for-10 on extra points. |
