Timberwolves Tie Up Eagles Soccer Teams
October 27, 2002

Like a clearance sale at Lazarus, there were plenty of ties to be had Sunday (Oct. 27) in Midland, MI. Too many as far as the Ashland University soccer teams were concerned.

Both AU teams left Northwood with ties Sunday. The AU women tied the Timberwolves 2-2 in double overtime and the AU men ended their afternoon with a 1-1 stalemate in one overtime.

In the women’s match, the Eagles got on the scoreboard early, sophomore Renee Kozma scoring her second goal of the season at 2:41. Senior Emily Hallman earned the assist. AU kept that lead until the 67:09 mark when NU’s Margaret Humiecki scored an unassisted goal, her seventh of the season.

Kozma put AU back in front, 2-1, at 77:37, scoring on a feed from freshman Maria Manzo. Northwood knotted the match at 2 on Jaclyn Singer’s third goal of the season. That came at 82:02. Julie Surma was credited with the assist.

Ashland held a 20-16 edge in shots, although in the two overtime periods Northwood led in attempts, 5-1. In corner kicks the Eagles enjoyed a 6-2 advantage.

Freshman Amanda Lindsey went the distance in goal for AU and had six saves. The tie leaves AU with a 10-1-2 record, 4-0-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Northwood is 9-3-1, 3-2-1 in the conference.

The Eagles took the early lead in the men’s match as freshman Brent Scarbrough scored via an assist from senior Brad Stinson at 20:53. The goal was Scarbrough’s team-best 10th of the season. That lead held up until 72:45 when NU’s David VanderMollen scored his first goal of the year. After that, neither team found the back of the net again.

Ashland had a 23-8 edge in shots and led in corner kicks, 8-1. Ben Becker recorded eight saves in goal for the ‘Wolves and senior Bayard Elfvin had one save for AU.

The tie leaves Ashland at 9-5-2, 2-1-2 in the GLIAC. Northwood is 9-3-2 and 1-2-2.

Both AU teams will play under the lights at Wheeling Jesuit this coming Wednesday (Oct. 30). The women’s match will kick off at 5 p.m., and the men’s contest will follow at 7:30 p.m.
