The Saginaw Valley State Cardinals saw a
different version of Hoosiers Thursday night (Dec. 5)
at Kates Gymnasium. This one didnt have much drama.
Indianapolis natives and Pike High School grads
Mike Campbell and Isaac Kincaid led the Ashland
University basketball team to a win in its Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. The Eagles took
control of the game early and cruised to a 104-76 triumph over
Saginaw Valley State. The Eagles are 6-0. SVSU is 4-3 and 2-1 in
league play. This is the first time the Eagles have started 6-0
since the 1999-2000 opened the season with seven consecutive
victories.

rebounds and blocked three shots. He hit six of eight shots from
the field.

had 24 points. He connected on seven of eight attempts from the
floor.
The Eagles took a 9-6 lead with 16:25 left in
the first half on a three-point field goal by freshman guard Chris
Steens. That broke a 6-6 tie and AU never trailed after that.
At halftime, the Eagles (6-0) were in front, 52-30.
Ashland had a 48-38 advantage on the glass. The
Eagles shot 52.2 percent (36-69) from the field. Defensively, AU
coaxed the visitors into 17 turnovers and held the Cardinals to
37.3 percent from the field (28-75). In points off of turnovers,
the Eagles led, 21-10. Ashland had a huge, 18-4 edge in fastbreak
points.
In addition to Campbell and Kincaid, two other
Eagles scored in double digits. Senior point guard Angelo
Edwards had 12 points and Steens scored 11 points.
