If the Ashland University Eagles were
running on fumes, it was pretty strong stuff in the tank. Those
fumes were so strong it made it look like Lake Superior State was
stinking up the joint.
The Eagles upped their record to 12-2 Monday
(Jan. 6), 4-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
play, with an 84-59 triumph at Lake Superior State. In recent
years, the Lakers have been a large stumbling block for the
Eagles. Entering Mondays game, Lake State held a 5-2 lead in
the all-time series.
This time, however, it was AU that enjoyed the
upper hand. Ashland had a 10-point lead at halftime, 37-27 and
over the last 20 minutes, AU outscored the home team, 47-32.
This was AUs third game on Michigans
Upper Peninsula, following games at Northern Michigan and Michigan
Tech. Mondays win gives AU a 2-1 record up north. Gannon
went 1-2 and Mercyhurst left the area 0-3.
If the Eagles were tired, they hid it well
Monday. Ashland held a 46-34 edge on the glass and shot 49.3
percent (34-69) from the field. AU had only six turnovers while
forcing the Lakers to give the basketball up 15 times.
Senior guard Isaac Kincaid led the
Eagles with 21 points. He hit nine of 17 shots from the floor.
Senior guard Angelo Edwards threw in 17 points and senior
forward Justin Larrick was good for 16 points. Freshman
guard Chris Steens had 10 points.
Senior forward Pat Rush pulled down a
career-best 13 rebounds. Sophomore center Mike Campbell
had 12 boards and rejected four shots. That rejection figure is
one shy of Campbells best single-game mark.
The only LSSU player to reach double digits in
scoring was Ben Dewar with 12 points. The Lakers are 6-6 and 1-3
in league action.
The Eagles are back home on Thursday (Jan. 9,
7:30 p.m), welcoming Grand Valley State to Kates Gymnasium. |
