Lake State Stops AU Women, 93-68
January 6, 2003

Lots of boats have been tossed around Lake Superior. Lots of basketball teams will suffer the same fate this season, enduring choppy waters when playing the Lake Superior State women’s basketball team.

The Lakers don’t have many flaws. They were picked to be one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the league’s preseason poll and Monday (Jan. 6), in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, they showed why.

Lake State sent the Eagles back to Ashland with a 93-68 loss. The win ups the Lakers’ record to 9-3, 4-1 in GLIAC action. The loss was AU’s fourth straight and puts the Eagles at 7-7, 2-3 in the conference.

Allyson Conaway had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the home team. Brooke Henderson had 13 points and five boards. Alice Duesing and Hillary Bultema scored 11 points each. Lake Superior shot 50 percent from the floor (39-78) and enjoyed a 43-36 rebounding advantage. Ashland had 25 turnovers, Lake State gave the ball away 16 times.

Sophomore guard Courtney Balser’s 13 points paced the Eagles. Junior guard Isolina Brescia had 11 points and sophomore guard-forward Beth Everman just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard-forward Kyra Gross also had 10 points for AU.

Ashland will be back at home this Thursday (Jan. 9, 5:30 p.m.), hosting Grand Valley State.
