While Three Dog Night proclaimed that One
is the Loneliest Number, Mercyhurst no longer has to
understand the feeling.
The Lakers notched their second Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season at Kates
Gymnasium with a 73-69 overtime win against Ashland on Saturday
(Feb. 1, 2003).
Down by two points with two seconds remaining
in regulation, Mercyhursts Holly Horton drained a jumper
from the elbow to tie the score at 64-64. She was fouled in the
process, but was not able to convert the free throw that would
have given the Lakers the win.
The Lakers outscored the Eagles, 9-5 in the
overtime frame to pull away with the victory.
Mercyhurst was led by Katie Lorinczs 15
points, and she added five steals and four assists for the
winners. Horton along with Jessica Weir each scored 12 points.
Junior Alanna Buurma scored a game-high
21 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Eagles. Beth
Everman added 13 points and seven rebounds while Isolina
Brescia scored 10 points and added six rebounds, six assists
and three steals. Senior Kristy Ritchie contributed with
six assists, five points, five rebounds and four steals. Freshman
Dee Bethune added nine points and three rebounds for the
Eagles.
AU dropped to 8-13, 3-9 in the GLIAC while
Mercyhurst improved its record to 5-15, 2-10 in the conference.
The Eagles will be in action on the road on
Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) against non-conference opponent Oakland
City. Game time is set for 6 p.m. |
