While Three Dog Night proclaimed that “One is the Loneliest Number,” – Mercyhurst no longer has to understand the feeling.

The Lakers notched their second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season at Kates Gymnasium with a 73-69 overtime win against Ashland on Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003).

Down by two points with two seconds remaining in regulation, Mercyhurst’s Holly Horton drained a jumper from the elbow to tie the score at 64-64. She was fouled in the process, but was not able to convert the free throw that would have given the Lakers the win.

The Lakers outscored the Eagles, 9-5 in the overtime frame to pull away with the victory.

Mercyhurst was led by Katie Lorincz’s 15 points, and she added five steals and four assists for the winners. Horton along with Jessica Weir each scored 12 points.

Junior Alanna Buurma scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Eagles. Beth Everman added 13 points and seven rebounds while Isolina Brescia scored 10 points and added six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior Kristy Ritchie contributed with six assists, five points, five rebounds and four steals. Freshman Dee Bethune added nine points and three rebounds for the Eagles.

AU dropped to 8-13, 3-9 in the GLIAC while Mercyhurst improved its record to 5-15, 2-10 in the conference.

The Eagles will be in action on the road on Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) against non-conference opponent Oakland City. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
