While hide-and-seek is a popular game for young
kids to play at home or in the schoolyard, the Hillsdale womens
basketball team has popularized their own version of the game
called Heid-and-Seek.
Senior guard Stephanie Heid scored a game-high
24 points and added six rebounds, six assists, and six steals to
lead the 22nd-ranked Chargers to a 70-50 victory over Ashland on
Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) at Kates Gymnasium.
Hillsdale raises its record to 20-3, 12-2 in
the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and remains
in first place in the South Division. Ashland drops to 9-15
overall and 3-11 in conference action.
In the first half, Heid got off to a slow start
- only connecting on one of her first seven shots, but quickly
caught fire and drained her next nine shots. She finished with 19
points in the first half and helped the Chargers take a 41-22 lead
going into halftime. Hillsdale shot 53 percent (20-38) in the
first half compared to the Eagles 39 percent (9-23).
Caitlyn Kennedy added 12 points and five
rebounds and point guard Mary Wiesen contributed with 10 points,
seven assists and three rebounds for the winners.
The Eagles were led by junior forward Alanna
Buurma who scored a team-high 11 points and pulled down seven
rebounds. Freshman guard Dee Bethune added 10 points and Nicole
Wright scored six points.
AU shot itself in the foot repeatedly with poor
shooting and turnovers - finishing with 22 in the game. Hillsdale
outscored the Eagles 24-6 on points off turnovers and were
dominating in the paint holding a 26-18 edge.
Ashland will return to action on Saturday (Feb.
15, 2003) for its final home game of the season against Wayne
State. Seniors Kyra Gross and Kristy Ritchie will be honored
before the game at 1 p.m.
