Freshman Dee Bethunes four free throws in
the final 30 seconds allowed Ashland to prevail, 76-73, against
Wayne State on Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at Kates Gymnasium.
With the Eagles down 73-72, Bethune, who
finished with nine points, was fouled and connected on two free
throws to put AU up by one point, 74-73. After a turnover by Jodi
Young, the Warriors were forced to foul Bethune once again, which
sent her to the free throw line where she made two free throws to
put the Eagles up, 76-73, with 10 seconds remaining in the game.
The Warriors were able to get an open look
behind the perimeter, but Jessica King was unable to connect.
Kristen Rogers rebounded Kings shot and passed to point
guard Ebony Vincent who missed a three-pointer as time expired.
Junior forward Alanna Buurma had a brilliant
day for the Eagles, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds while
senior Kyra Gross scored 11 points.
Senior Kristy Ritchie put together another
all-around solid effort with 10 points, eight rebounds, six
assists, one block and one steal in her final home game in an
Eagles uniform.
Ashlands size proved to be a huge
advantage as the Eagles outrebounded WSU, 52-36 which
resulted in a 21-9 second chance point edge. AUs bench
outscored the Warriors, 25-6.
AU improved its record to 10-15, 4-11 in Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action while Wayne State
dropped to 16-9, 12-4 in the conference.
The Eagles will be on the road for their final
two games of the season as they travel to Erie, PA, to battle
Mercyhurst (Feb. 20) then Gannon (Feb. 22).
