Eagles Pound South Dakota, 20-3
March 9, 2003

Those with a quick wit would say that the Ashland University baseball team did everything right but miss an extra point on Saturday (Mar. 8) during a 20-3 win over the University of South Dakota in Fort Myers, FL. All kidding aside, the Eagles showed the same kind of power as the NFL’s best – the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – in improving to 2-1.

Ashland collected 19 hits in a game that was terminated after eight innings. Freshman infielder Eric McDaniel led the hit parade, going 4-for-5 with his second homer of the season. Senior infielder Tim Hinchliffe was 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases. Senior catcher-designated hitter Brock Wiskochil and sophomore outfielder Richie Jones both went 3-for-4. Wiskochil had a double and a roundtripper and Jones, a transfer from Northern Kentucky, had two stolen bases. Junior second baseman Mark Kahlenberg blasted his first home run of the campaign.

Senior righthander Nate Wright was the beneficiary of the AU attack. He started and hurled six innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Wright’s 1-0. Bryce Bednarczyk, a junior lefty in his first year with the Eagles, went the last two innings and whiffed five batters. Bednarczyk came to the Eagles via Columbus State Community College.
