The Ashland University baseball team
tried two styles on Sunday (Mar. 9). They tried to win via a
slugfest and when that didnt work, they tried a pitching
battle. All the Eagles got for their effort was a pair of losses.
Sunday in Fort Myers, FL, the Eagles lost to
Mansfield, 13-9 and followed that up with a 3-1 setback against
Indianapolis. AU ends the weekend with a 2-3 record. The Eagles
will remain in Florida throughout this week to play a full slate
of games.
Mansfield struck for 10 runs in the first
inning, driving sophomore starter Matt Pignato from the
mound. Junior Chad Moore and sophomore Ryan Douglas
came out of the bullpen and did a good job of holding the Mounties
in check, but the hole was too deep for the Eagles to overcome.
Mansfield led, 10-7 after three innings and 12-9 after six frames.
Senior infielder Tim Hinchliffe and
junior outfielder Brandon Cornell both went 3-for-4.
Junior catcher Josh Gaub and senior designated hitter Brock
Wiskochil were 2-for-4. Wiskochil had three RBI.
Indianapolis managed only three hits off of
senior righty Ryan Hartzell in the second game, but that
was enough to pick up a win. The Greyhounds got an RBI double in
the first inning and a two-run homer in the third inning. All of
Indys hits came in those two innings. Hartzell went seven
innings and had two walks and six strikeouts.
Ashland had nine hits. Wiskochil and senior
first baseman Butch Kaufman both had a pair of safeties.
Both teams played errorless baseball. |
