Ashland University head football coach
Gary Keller has announced the addition of 12 student-athletes who
will attend the university in the fall and play football. These
are the first recruits in the 2003 class. The names of more
players will be released as their paperwork is finalized.
Biographical information on the first five
recruits can be found below.
- Adam Bacon (Bryan, OH) Bacon
is a 6-4, 280-pound offensive lineman. He was an all-league and
all-district selection while playing for the Bryan High School
Golden Bears. He earned three letters in football and two in
track and field.
- Brett Briscoe (Lewittsburg, OH/LaBrae)
Briscoe is a 6-2, 195-pound linebacker. As a senior, he was
the Trumbull County player of the year and an all-district and
all-conference all-star. Hes been earning all-conference
and all-district laurels since his sophomore season. This past
season he led the Vikings in tackles with 110 stops. In
basketball he led the team in scoring (11.8 ppg.) and pulled
down 8.9 rpg. As a sophomore, his .433 batting average led the
baseball team.
- Vincent Cashdollar (Newark, OH)
Like Bacon, Cashdollar is an offensive lineman. The 6-3,
300-pound Cashdollar was a standout at Newark High School where
he was first team all-region and second team all-conference and
all-district. He is the second player in school history to play
four years of varsity football a total of 40 games.
Cashdollar is a four-year letterman on the gridiron. He also
earned four letters in track and field and three citations in
basketball. Cashdollar was a high school teammate of current AU
players Chris Campbell and Centrell Turner.
- Phil Hallman (Solon, OH) Hallman
comes to the Eagles as a running back. He could find his niche
on the college level as an H-back. The 6-0, 195-pound Hallman
was a first team, Division I all-state selection. He was
all-district and all-county and the most valuable player in the
conference. Three times he was a first team All-Western Reserve
Conference pick. He was also a Cleveland Plain Dealer first team
selection. On defense, Hallman had seven fumble recoveries in a
season. He had 13 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in a season. A
captain as a senior, he averaged 11.1 yards per carry.
- Kyle Johann (Findlay, OH) A
6-0, 190-pound quarterback, Johann completed 224 of 374 passes
(65 percent) for 3,016 yards with 29 touchdowns and five
interceptions as a senior. He rushed for 692 yards and 17
touchdowns. In his career he threw for 5,008 yards with 46
touchdowns. With Johann calling the signals, the Trojans won
league championships in 2001 and 2002, were regional champs in
2002 and advanced to the state semifinals in 2002. Johann was
first team All-Great Lakes League and was the conferences
offensive player of the year in 2002. He was the district player
of the year, the Northwest Ohio Coaches Association player of
the year and was named to the Toledo Blades first team. He
was first team All-Ohio.
- Tim Kawecki (Petersburgh, OH/Springfield
Local) - Kawecki is a 6-3, 267-pound defensive lineman.
This past season he was recognized as the Inter-County League
defensive player of the year. He was also honored as an
all-state performer. This past season Kawecki had four sacks,
five tackles for loss and four fumble recoveries. He also
recorded six pass breakups. Kawecki earned three letters in
football and two in baseball. Hes a second team all-league
performer on the diamond.
- Ronald Lewis II (Maple Heights, OH)
A 6-0, 170-pound wide receiver, Lewis had 38 receptions for
966 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2003. He was a special mention
all-state selection and secured all-district and all-league
honors. He was also the teams most valuable offensive
player. Maple Heights made the state playoffs for the second
time in school history and had its best record in 47 years.
Lewis earned three letters in baseball and two each in football
and basketkball.
- Anthony Marstiller (Windham, OH)
Marstiller has been all-state special mention and all-state
honorable mention while playing for Windham High School. He is a
6-2, 185-pound defensive back. As a senior, he was first team
All-Portage County League and first team All-Northeast Ohio. The
Bombers went 9-2 his senior season. Marstiller has also been a
standout in basketball. He was first team all-conference and
first team All-Northeast Ohio and all-state special mention
while playing for a team that went 20-2. In baseball, he played
on a team that was a state runnerup.
- Kiel Miller (West Unity, OH/Hilltop)
Miller was a prep star on both sides of the ball at Hilltop
High School. A 6-5, 235-pound tight end/defensive end, he was
first team on both offense and defense as a senior. He was also
an All-Ohio honorable mention selection. Hes the schools
career leader in sacks. Miller also experienced great success in
basketball. Hes the schools career rebounds leader
and second all-time in points. He was first team all-conference
as a junior and senior and the teams most valuable player
both seasons. Miller secured four letters in basketball, three
citations in football and one letter in track and field.
- Chris Norris (Massillon, OH/Jackson)
Norris was a second team all-league and all-county choice.
He appeared in the East-West All-Star Game. The 6-3, 225-pound
Norris earned four letters each in football and baseball. In
football, he played on a Federal League championship squad in
2001. In baseball last spring he hit .421 with four homers and
26 RBI.
- Zach Redman (Nashport, OH/Licking
Valley) Redman is a 6-6, 260-pound offensive guard.
He was named the teams best offensive lineman this past
season. Licking Valley won conference championships his last two
years in the lineup and in 2001 was the state runnerup. He
earned three letters in football and one in basketball.
- Nick Strance (Willard, OH) Strance
is a highly-touted quarterback. The 6-2, 195-pound Strance holds
school, single-season records for pass completions (164), most
100-yard passing games (12) and most games with a touchdown pass
(12). He also holds school career records for games with a TD
pass (28), most 100-yard passing games (31) and most 2,000-yard
passing seasons (2). Strance was first team All-Ohio as a senior
and the district player of the year. He was first team
all-conference, all-district and the Mansfield News-Journal
player of the year. He secured three letters apiece in football,
basketball and track and field.
Ashland University is an NCAA Division II
institution that competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
