Seniors Nate Wright and Chris
Skibinski are the third and fourth starters in the Ashland
University pitching rotation. Both are quiet righthanders who dont
really have an aggressive sales pitch when it comes to boasting
about their pitching.
But who needs a sales pitch when you have out
pitches like this duo?
Sunday (Mar. 30) at AUs Donges Field, the
two seniors hurled shutouts as AU swept Gannon in a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader. Wright
pitched a three-hitter in the first game as the Eagles routed the
Golden Knights, 13-0. In the second game, Skibinski pitched a
complete game four-hitter in a 9-0 Ashland triumph.
Wright didnt walk a batter and struck out
eight. Skibinski didnt give out a free pass and had four
strikeouts. Wright is 5-0 and the team leader in wins. Skibinski
is 4-0 and is second on the team in victories.
The Eagles, who won three of four from Gannon
over the weekend, are 18-8, 7-1 in GLIAC action. Gannon is 7-11
and 2-6.
Ashland didnt have any problems scoring
runs in either contest Sunday. In the first game, senior Brock
Wiskochil ignited the offense by going 4-for-4 with five RBI.
The catcher-designated hitter had a double and three singles.
Leadoff man Tim Hinchliffe was 2-for-4 and scored three
runs and junior catcher Josh Gaub was 3-for-4 and drove in
three runs. Junior center fielder Brandon Cornell went
2-for-2 and senior first baseman Butch Kaufman was
2-for-4.
Junior infielder Pat Crum had two of Gannons
three hits. Sophomore righthander Dale Dollard was the starter and
loser for GU.
If Gannon had any thoughts about bouncing back
to take the nightcap, the Eagles quickly erased them. AU scored
three times in the first inning of the second game and added six
more runs in the third. Gaub had a two-run single in the first.
AU collected five of its 10 hits in the third
inning. Senior outfielder Adam Whetstone had a two-run
single in the frame and sophomore outfielder Richie Jones
drove in two runs with a double.
Gaub, Jones and Cornell finished the second
game 2-for-3. Whetstone was 2-for-4. Sophomore lefty Matt Berkey
took the loss, falling to 0-3. |
