Eagles Sweep Lakers in Softball Twinbill, 8-0 and 6-1

The Ashland University softball team swept a doubleheader against Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Mercyhurst, 8-0 and 6-1, on Friday (Apr. 18) at Brookside Park.

In game one, junior Josie Nelson (Prior Lake, MN/Jordan) pitched a five-inning two-hit shutout to pick up her 20th win of the season. She struck out 12 hitters and yielded only one walk.

The Eagles pounded out 13 hits led by sophomore Mandy Sansbury (Ripley, WV) who was 3-3 with a double and knocked in three runs while scoring one. Nelson and Sarah Maxwell (Elyria, OH/Midview) each added two hits and one run scored. Maxwell also had an RBI double in the fifth inning. Shay Mulford (Plainfield, OH/Ridgewood), Ann Dunmire (Loudonville, OH) and Nicole Placie (Cridersville, OH/Wapakoneta) each drove in one run.

Marissa Bartholomew led the Lakers with a double. Stacy Pastva picked up the loss for Mercyhurst after allowing eight runs on 12 hits in three innings of work.

In game two, AU used a four-run fifth inning to break open the game. Sansbury continued her hot day as she connected with two hits, including a solo home run and double. She scored two runs.

Junior Leslie Eberhardt (Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) pitched a complete game six-hitter as she allowed only one run while striking out six Lakers. She improved her record to 14-6.

Mulford added two hits and Colleen Devery (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) had a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Bartholomew and Kate Conochan each had two hits for Mercyhurst. Bartholomew picked up the loss for the Lakers as she hurled 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits while walking two Eagle hitters. She dropped to 3-5.

Ashland will be in action on Saturday (Apr. 19) against GLIAC foe Gannon with game time slated for 11 a.m. It will be Senior Day at Brookside Park where AU will honor three seniors – Dunmire, Mulford and Katie Weyand (Wadsworth, OH) – immediately after game one.
