Eagle Baseball Bats Come Alive Against Northwood

You can almost hear Dr. Frankenstein in the screaming in the background, “It’s alive. It’s alive” when watching the AU baseball team on Saturday (Apr. 19).

After splitting with the Northwood Timberwolves on Friday (Apr. 18), the Eagles came back with a vengeance winning two games, 17-3 and 14-2, at Donges Field.

Ashland improved their record to 25-14-1, 12-6-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northwood fell to 14-17, 6-8 in conference action.

On the day, the Eagles pounded out 31 hits by 15 different batters and the pitching was just as sharp.

In game one, senior pitcher Ryan Hartzell (Alliance, OH) hurled six innings, allowing only three runs on seven hits while striking out five NU batters. He improved his record to 4-5.

Junior Josh Gaub (Brunswick, OH) put on a display at the plate as he went 4-4 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. He drilled two doubles.

Senior Tim Hinchliffe (Ontario, Canada/Glen Oaks C.C) and freshman David Waters (Wadworth, OH) each added two hits apiece and two runs scored. Waters knocked a triple and three RBI while Hinchliffe collected two RBI.

Bryce Bednarczyk (Hebron, OH/Columbus State C.C.) added a triple and Adam Whetstone (Versailles, OH/Florida College) scored two runs for the Eagles.

Nick Metzger collected two hits, including a double for the Timberwolves. Travis VanHaitsma also added a double.

Corey Brant picked up the loss as he threw 2.1 innings allowing seven runs on four hits. He fell to 1-2.

There was no letdown in game two as the Eagles pounded out 14 runs on 19 hits. Junior Chad Moore (Columbus, OH/Columbus State C.C.) went the distance as he pitched seven innings and allowed only two runs and three hits while striking out four hitters. He is now 1-0 on the season.

Hinchliffe led the way offensively as he was 3-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. He is leading the Eagles with a .424 batting average.

Gaub had another big game with two hits and three RBI while Whetstone collected two doubles and two RBI and one run scored.

Chris Skibinski (Schererville, OH/Seton La Salle) and Richie Jones (Cincinnati, OH/Northern Kentucky) each contributed with two hits apiece. One of Jones’ hits was a home run.

Mark Kahlenberg (Pemberville, OH/Owens C.C.) knocked a home run while Brandon Cornell (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) added a triple and one RBI.

Trent Mulder pitched 2.1 innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits in a losing effort. His record fell to 2-3.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 22) against West Liberty State at Donges Field. The doubleheader is slated to start at 1 p.m.
