2003-04 Women’s Golf Preview: Construction Continues With Program
August 5, 2003

The new business building that’s being built at Ashland University is progressing right on schedule. The same thing can be said for AU women’s golf program.

Women’s golf is one of AU’s newest athletic programs. Over the past three years, the Eagles have worked at building numbers. That’s still a priority and now the job falls to first-year coach Steve Paramore.

Paramore is well known throughout Ohio. He won the Ohio Amateur Championship in mid-July. In college, Paramore played on a NCAA Division II national championship team at Florida Southern. An Ashland, OH, native, Paramore played on a state championship team at Ashland High School. For a first-year head coach, Paramore is well versed in golf in northeastern Ohio.

There are six players on this year’s roster. Three of those – senior Mary Kay Dickman, junior Gina Carpenter and sophomore Nicole Cespedes – have playing experience. Cespedes had some noteworthy finishes a year ago. She finished in a tie for second at the Gannon Fall Invitational and carded AU’s top score at the Northwood Invitational and the Malone Spring Invite.

That veteran trio will be joined by three freshmen – Meghan Marrs, Michelle Oney and Emily Schilling. Look, in the coming years, for those numbers to grow.

“I’m looking forward to that,” said Paramore of recruiting. “I like getting on that level, talking to student-athletes like friends. I’m looking forward to teaching them what I learned in college golf. I know what it’s like in college golf, to get up each morning, get mentally ready and lug your bag around for 36 holes.”
