November 12, 2003

Ashland University announced today that head football coach Gary Keller will not be returning next season.

Keller spent 10 years as Ashland’s head football coach. His career record is 51-55. The Eagles were 2-9 each of the past two seasons.

Under Keller’s direction, the Eagles enjoyed six winning seasons. In 1997, Keller directed the Eagles to a 9-1 regular-season finish, a share of the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference championship and the school’s second-ever NCAA Division II playoff berth. The Eagles lost in the first round of the playoffs at Slippery Rock, 30-20.

Keller came to Ashland in 1982 as an offensive line coach. He held that position until 1985 when he became the defensive coordinator. His first season as the Eagles’ head coach was 1994.

“Gary Keller has provided great service to Ashland University and we extend our thanks for his efforts,” said AU director of athletics Bill Goldring. “We wish him success in future endeavors and want nothing but the best for him and his family.”
