AU Uses Balanced Attack to Stop SRU Women

Ashland University doesn’t offer gymnastics. Yet thanks to nearly perfect balance, the AU women’s basketball team didn’t fall off the beam on Sunday (Nov. 30) on the second day of the Domino’s Pizza Classic.

The Eagles won their fifth consecutive game, improving to 5-1 with a 79-66 triumph at Kates Gymnasium. The Eagles had five players reach double digits in scoring and perfectly filled out just about every column on the stat sheet.

Ashland shot 54.7 percent from the field and 83.3 percent at the free throw line while The Rock checked in at 39.1 percent and 76.5 percent. On the boards, AU enjoyed a 42-30 advantage. The Eagles induced the visitors into 26 turnovers and gave the ball away 18 times. From start to finish, the Eagles were in control.

Junior center Jackie Mason led the Ashland scoring parade with 14 points. Mason also collected 10 rebounds, rejected five shots and had three assists and two steals. Senior forward Alanna Buurma had 12 points, five boards and four assists.

Senior guard Isolina Brescia, junior guard-forward Angie Heintz and freshman guard Amber Rall contributed 10 points apiece. Brescia also had five assists and three steals.

Slippery Rock’s lone lead came at 18:23 of the first half when an Amber McFeely jumper gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. The last time the game was tied came with 9:46 to go in the first half when the teams were knotted at 21. Ashland was in front at halftime, 40-34. AU led by as much as 22 points in the second half.

Erin Frankovich had 15 points to pace The Rock (1-4). Stacey Green had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In Sunday’s first game, Ferris State downed Kentucky Wesleyan, 81-44. Ashland and FSU went 2-0 over the weekend. Slippery Rock was 1-1 and KWC went 0-2.

Ashland’s next game is its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener. That comes on Thursday (Dec. 4) at Kates Gymnasium against Grand Valley State.
