When it come to holiday travel plans, Las Vegas or anyplace in Florida is listed in front of Ashland, OH. That’s in everyone’s travel planner except that of Ferris State women’s basketball coach Tracey Fisk

On the weekend after Thanksgiving, Fisk had the Bulldogs in Ashland for the Dominos Pizza Classic, where FSU went 2-0. On Saturday (Dec. 6), the first Saturday in December and with Christmas around the corner, the ‘Dogs were back at AU where they snapped a six-game Eagle winning streak, downing the Eagles, 85-81.

The Bulldogs are 6-1, 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, while Ashland is 6-2 and 1-1. This was AU’s first setback since dropping the season opener at Clarion.

This game was a case of AU not being able to put a bow on what could have been a nice present heading into next week’s two-game trip to Erie, PA. Ashland led at halftime, 49-41 and with 8:28 left in regulation, enjoyed a 10-point lead. Ferris State kept pushing the action and unlike Thursday night, when AU was able to hold off Grand Valley State, this time the Bulldogs were able to take the lead. It didn’t help that Ashland was outrebounded, 52-35 and had 25 turnovers compared to 18 for the visitors.

Even with those numbers on its side, it took FSU a long time to catch the Eagles. The Bulldogs took the lead for good with 24 seconds left in regulation when Erin Miller hit a pair of free throws for an 81-79 lead. With nine seconds remaining in the game, Molly Potvin dropped in two more free throws for a four-point spread and that was enough of a cushion for the Bulldogs. In the last 4:15 Ashland was outscored, 13-6.

Miller, a sophomore point guard, finished with 22 points. Junior forward Sarah Duesing had 18 points and four steals and the 5-10 Potvin had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Ashland was led by senior guard Isolina Brescia. She had 20 points. Senior forward Alanna Buurma had 13 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Amber Rall fired in 14 points and junior center Jackie Mason contributed 10 points.

The Eagles will play at Mercyhurst on Thursday (Dec. 11, 6 p.m.).
