Eagles Take Two of Three on Baseball's Opening Weekend
February 22, 2004

The Ashland University baseball team enjoyed a successful opening weekend by winning two of three games at Bellarmine in Louisville, KY. The Eagles won their second game of the season Sunday (Feb. 22), downing the host Knights, 7-4. On Saturday, AU and Bellarmine had divided a doubleheader.

Sunday’s single game was a nine-inning affair. The Eagles got a solid pitching performance from junior righty Todd Martinelli. A transfer from Columbus State Community College, Martinelli made his first AU appearance a good one. He lasted seven innings and gave up two runs, both unearned. He was touched for three hits. Martinelli walked five and struck out five before turning the game over to senior Chad Moore. Moore finished the game with two innings of work. He allowed a pair of runs on two hits. Moore didn’t walk a batter and had two strikeouts.

Junior second baseman Adam Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Sophomore outfielder David Waters and senior catcher Josh Gaub went 2-for-3. Senior outfielder Brandon Cornell and junior outfielder Allen Ayers went 2-for-5. Cornell’s day included a double.
