Alex Jones

Guard Alex Jones has been selected as the GLIAC freshman of the year.

It wasn’t easy keeping up with Jones in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2003-04.

No other rookie in the league could maintain the pace of Ashland University freshman guard Alex Jones (Englewood, OH/Northmont). The league’s coaches confirmed how well Jones played by selecting the point guard as the GLIAC freshman of the year on Thursday (Mar. 4). Jones is the first AU player to receive that award.

Jones started the year coming off the bench playing both point and off guard. Midway through the season he became the starting point guard. From that point through the end of the season, he was AU’s most dangerous scoring threat. He was a terror on defense, hounding opposing guards all over the floor.

The freshman ended the season as the Eagles’ leading scorer (12.5 ppg.). He also led the club in three-point field goals (54) and steals (33). Jones shot 41.5 percent (54-135) from three-point range. Over Ashland’s final five games the 5-11 freshman averaged 16.8 ppg. He was named the GLIAC South Division player of the week for Feb. 9.
