In fashion, styles come and go. In baseball, those who can win with any style stand the test of time.

Sunday (Apr. 4) at Donges Field the Eagles won via a pitching duel and with a slugfest. The Eagles swept Hillsdale, 3-0 and 16-9. AU has won six consecutive games and is 23-7, 7-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Hillsdale is 8-18, 3-11 in league play.

Senior lefty Bryce Bednarczyk shut down the Chargers in the opener, allowing four hits in seven innings. Bednarczyk (3-1) struggled a bit with his control, walking five. But he worked out of every jam, thanks in large part to 10 strikeouts.

All three AU runs scored via sacrifice flies. Senior center fielder Brandon Cornell, freshman first baseman Ron Oneson and senior shortstop Eric McDaniel picked up the RBI. Senior catcher Josh Gaub was the only AU player with more than one hit – he was 2-for-3 with a double and triple. AU had six hits off of starter and loser Corey Krug (2-5).

The Eagles led 9-0 after two frames in the nightcap. However, AU junior lefthander Ryan Douglas couldn’t keep the Chargers under control. The visitors got to Douglas for four runs in the third inning and added four more runs in the fourth. Douglas lasted 3 2/3 innings (nine hits, eight runs, four earned runs) before leaving in favor of senior righty Chad Moore. Moore got the win with 3 1/3 innings of one-hit work. He gave up one unearned run. He walked two and struck out four.

The Eagles collected 11 hits off of the HC tandem of Steve Kellerman (3-4) and Dan Baker. Gaub was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Oneson was 2-for-3 with a homer and triple and three RBI. McDaniel had one hit and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder David Waters and Cornell both had two hits and two RBI.

The Eagles return to the diamond on Wednesday, Apr. 7 with a doubleheader at West Liberty State.
