The Ashland University baseball team increased its winning streak to eight games Wednesday (Apr. 7) with a pair of wins at West Liberty State. The Eagles won, 4-2 and 9-2. Ashland is 25-7.

Senior outfielder Brandon Cornell, senior catcher Josh Gaub, freshman first baseman Ron Oneson and junior outfielder Allen Ayers had two hits apiece. Gaub and sophomore outfielder David Waters clubbed doubles.

Senior righthander Chad Moore upped his record to 3-0 with four shutout innings. Moore gave the Hilltoppers two hits. He walked three and struck out one. Junior righthander Cody Castle picked up the save by hurling the final three innings. He gave up two runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. The save is his third of the year.

Senior outfielder Bryce Bednarczyk got AU off and running in the second game. He belted two homers – one in the first inning, the other in the second – helping the Eagles go in front, 4-1 after two innings. Bednarczyk finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore catcher Ray Frisbee was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Freshman outfielder Josh Davidson was 2-for-4 with a double.

AU used four pitchers. The starter and winner was junior righthander Matt Pignato. He worked three innings and allowed a pair of runs on seven hits. Pignato is 2-1. He was followed by junior lefty Ryan Douglas, junior righthander Todd Martinelli and sophomore righthander Jim Barry.

The Eagles are back in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend, playing a four-game series at Northwood on Friday and Saturday (Apr. 9-10).
