Ashland University freshman pitcher-outfielder Josh Davidson introduced himself to the Mercyhurst Lakers Wednesday (Apr. 14). For Davidson, a handshake wasn’t sufficient. Instead, Davidson shook up the Lakers with his arm and his bat.

In Wednesday’s first game of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Davidson started and pitched six innings in a 3-1 AU triumph. In the nightcap, Davidson had two of Ashland’s five hits in a 5-3 victory. The games were played in Erie, PA, at Jerry Uht Park.

The Eagles are 29-9, 11-3 in GLIAC action. The Lakers are 12-21 and 6-10.

Davdison is 5-2. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six while allowing six hits. Junior lefthander Ryan Douglas pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his second save.

Ashland scored once in the third inning and two more times in the third. Freshman first baseman Ron Oneson was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and senior second baseman Mark Kahlenberg and senior outfielder Brandon Cornell were 2-for-3. Freshman third baseman Casey Jirsa hammered his seventh homer of the season.

Dave Guido pitched the first six innings for the ‘Hurst and took the loss, falling to 3-2. Guido gave up three runs, one earned, on seven hits. Tim Stacey was 3-for-3 and belted his seventh homer for the home team.

AU scored twice in the second inning of the second game and added single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Davidson ripped a double and senior shortstop Eric McDaniel tripled. Junior righthander Cody Castle bounced back from his first loss at Northwood last weekend with a complete-game seven hitter. Castle is 6-1 and the complete game was his fourth of the season. He struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.

Starter J.D. Roewer (3-1) took the loss. The MC hurler lasted six innings and gave up five hits and five runs. Only two of the five runs Roewer allowed were earned. The Lakers were guilty of four errors. Nick Candy pitched the final inning for the ‘Hurst.

MC’s Matt King drove in all three of his team’s runs. He hit his second homer of the season.

Ashland will host Wayne State in a four-game series on Saturday-Sunday, April, 17-18.
