Game 1       Game 2

It was Youth Day Saturday (Apr. 17) at Ashland University’s Donges Field. The youngsters in attendance got their choice of two types of chicken wings – regular or spicy.

The baseball games the children watched between Ashland and Wayne State were much the same. The first game saw the Eagles pound out 16 hits – that’s something of a regular occurence - as they hung a 13-8 loss on the Warriors.

The nightcap left the Eagles a little hot – and with a bad taste in their mouths – as Wayne State rebounded for a 10-3 triumph.

Ashland is 30-10, 12-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and WSU is 16-20 and 9-7. The teams will play two more times Sunday (Apr. 18, noon) in Ashland.

Freshman first baseman Ron Oneson was 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead the Eagles in the first game. Senior catcher Josh Gaub was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Leadoff man Allen Ayers went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases.

The Eagles needed all of that offensive firepower because starting pitcher Todd Martinelli (6-2) didn’t have his usual command. The Warriors struck for two runs in the first inning and added two more runs in the third and fifth innings. They pushed across a s ingle run in the second and fourth innings. The junior lasted 6 1/3 innings and surrendered eight runs – seven earned – on 11 hits. He walked two and struck out three. Junior lefthander Ryan Douglas got the game’s final two outs.

Jon Weisman blasted a pair of homers and drove in four runs for WSU. Catcher Joe Neal was 2-for-3 with a homer. Kirk Anderson (2-5) went the distance and took the loss.

WSU methodically chipped away at AU in the second game. The visitors got to starter and loser Bryce Bednarczyk (4-2) for a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. The Warriors put the game away with a four-run outburst in the sixth. The Eagles didn’t help their own cause as they were guilty of five errors. Bednarczyk went 5 1/3 innings and allowed nine runs, seven earned, on nine hits. Righthanders Chad Moore and Jim Barry finished on the mound.

AU managed seven hits off of Kyle Hill (3-2). He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter in a route-going effort. Oneson and freshman designated hitter Josh Davidson slugged doubles and senior outfielder Brandon Cornell tripled.

Gerry Dufour went 3-for-5 for WSU and Tim Baywal and Adwin Springer both drove in two runs. Springer had a triple.
