Every softball season will have some
ebb and flow to it, but for the Ashland University Eagles, this
season has had all the ups and downs of an EKG machine thats
gone out of control.
Sunday, AU lost a twinbill at home to Findlay,
providing the Oilers with their first two Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wins of the year. Tuesday
(Apr. 20) at Brookside Park, the Eagles regrouped and took two
games from Hillsdale, stopping the Chargers, 1-0 and 7-1. As those
scores indicate, the only thing predictable about the 2004 Eagles
is that they are unpredictable.
AU is 21-15, 6-4 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale is
14-16-1, 7-9 in conference action.
AU senior Josie Nelson and HC senior
Joelle Frantz hooked up in a pitching duel in the opener. The games
only run came in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Jill
Alldering raced home to score from third base on a wild pitch.
Nelson improved her record to 10-8 with the
victory. She gave up seven hits, didnt walk a batter and
struck out six. Frantz allowed three hits. She walked one and
whiffed two.
Ashland gave senior righty Leslie Eberhardt
a nice cushion to work with in the second game as AU scored five
times in the first inning. The Chargers had two errors in the
second game and four for the day and some of that erratic
defensive play helped AU throughout the second game. AU ended up
with nine hits, but scored only two more times after the first
inning.
Sophomore outfielder Ashley Mayle went
3-for-3 with two RBI. Mayle had a single, double and triple.
Junior outfielder Michelle Congrove was 2-for-2.
As for Eberhardt, she struggled with her
control early, but quickly settled into a groove and allowed only
one hit in completing her 12th game of the season. She walked two
and struck out three. Shes 10-6.
Hillsdales lone safety was a double by
Jamie Meyers.
The Eagles will entertain Wayne State on
Wednesday (Apr. 21, 3:30 p.m.) at Brookside West.
