AU Baseball Splits with Saginaw Valley State

The Ashland University baseball team came away with a split against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Apr. 24) in University Center, MI.

In the first game, junior Cody Castle (Dayton, OH/Sinclair C.C.) was the hard-luck pitcher as he tossed six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out five hitters while walking two. Castle dropped his record to 6-2.

SVSU starter Steve Liebrect hurled a brilliant game – limiting the Eagles to one run on four hits. He sat down four AU hitters and allowed four to reach on a free pass.

Senior outfielder Bryce Bednarczyk (Newark, OH/Columbus State C.C.) led the squad with two hits in the contest.

The sleeping bats of the Eagles were awoken in game two as AU pounded out 14 hits en route to an 8-0 victory. Freshman Josh Davidson (Lexington, OH) threw six innings, limiting the SVSU bats to two hits.

Senior Brandon Cornell (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) led the hitting barrage with three hits, including a RBI double. Allen Ayers (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep), Josh Gaub (Brunswick, OH), Ron Oneson (London, ONT/Saunders Secondary School) and Mark Kahlenberg (Pemberville, OH/Owens C.C.) each added two hits apiece. Oneson also drove in four runs for the winners.

Ron Lindquist suffered the loss for the Cardinals as he pitched three innings giving up six runs on 10 hits. Jeff Schulz pitched the final four frames, allowing two runs on four hits.

With the victory, Ashland’s record stands at 33-11 (15-5 in the GLIAC) while Saginaw Valley State holds a 25-21 (17-11 in the GLIAC) record.

The Eagles will be back in action against SVSU on Sunday (Apr. 25) for a doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
