Ashland University senior catcher Josh Gaub is known for the way he catches pitches. Most times, that’s in reference to his glove.

Sunday (Apr. 25) at Saginaw Valley State, Gaub caught several deliveries from SVSU pitchers with his bat, propelling the Eagles to a sweep of the Cardinals.

Gaub homered in both games as AU won twice, 8-4 and 11-5. The victories give the Eagles a 35-11 mark, 17-5 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. SVSU is 25-23 and 17-13.

Gaub hit .429 for the recently completed week with two homers and eight RBI. The Eagles are entering the most important stretch of their season and it appears as if Gaub, who has started all 46 games in 2004, is as strong as he was at the beginning of the season.

In Sunday’s first game, Gaub was 1-for-2 with three RBI. AU gave starting pitcher Todd Martinelli excellent early support, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning. AU scored once in the third and the Cardinals bounced back with three runs in their half of the third. AU led, 5-3 before pushing three runs across the plate in the top of the sixth.

Senior shortstop Eric McDaniel was 2-for-4 and drove home two runs. Junior left fielder Allen Ayers went 2-for-5 and senior center fielder Brandon Cornell was 2-for-4 and scored four times.

Martinelli lasted 4.2 innings and allowed six hits. He gave up three runs, two earned, with four walks and three strikeouts. Lefty Ryan Douglas went the final 2.1 innings and gave up a run on two hits.

Gaub, McDaniel and sophomore outfielder David Waters all homered in the nightcap. Gaub was 3-for-4 with four RBI and McDaniel finished 3-for-4 with one RBI. Waters was 2-for-4 and chased home a pair of runs. Ayers had a pair of doubles in a 3-for-5 game.

Bryce Bednarczyk pitched his third complete game of the season in raising his record to 5-2. The Cardinals got to him for 10 hits and five runs, all earned. He walked four and struck out nine.

Adam Piggott did most of the damage for the Cards. He went 3-for-4 with a homer, double and two RBI.

Ashland will entertain Northern Kentucky Tuesday (Apr. 27, 2 p.m.) in a non-conference doubleheader.
