After playing eight games in four days, the Ashland University softball team finally ran out of gas at the end of its northern road swing.

The Eagles had their eight-game winning streak come to an end after a pair of losses to Saginaw Valley State on Sunday (Apr. 25) in University Center, MI.

The Cardinals came back from a 2-0 deficit to score four runs in the bottom of the third inning to sail past AU to a 5-2 victory in game one. Katie Albert drilled a bases loaded triple in that frame for SVSU.

AU got to the Cardinal hurler Beth Carkuff right off the bat as the SVSU junior lasted only two innings. The switch proved to pay dividends as SVSU reliever Cory Pintek pitched the final five frames, allowing one hit. She improved her record to 5-6.

Josie Nelson (Prior Lake, MN/Jordan) suffered the loss for AU as she went the distance on the mound giving up five runs on seven hits. She struck out 10 hitters in the game. Freshman Bree Beabout (Powell, OH/Olentangy) collected a pair of hits in a losing effort. Sara Mathes (Massillon, OH/Jackson) added a double in the game.

In the second game, SVSU scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 4-3 victory. The Cardinals roughed up AU starter Leslie Eberhardt (Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) collecting 11 hits in the game. Eberhardt dropped her record to 12-7 on the season.

Beabout led AU with two hits, including a RBI double in the third inning. Mathes and Ann Dunmire (Loudonville, OH) each added solo home runs.

Lisa Kaniszewski and Tracy Greenwood each added three hits for the Cardinals while Nicole Shick collected two hits and drove in three runs.

Karen Ray evened her record at 8-8 with the victory. She gave up three runs on five hits in five innings of action.

The Eagles dropped their record to 27-17 and 12-6 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Saginaw Valley State improved to 26-19-1 and 11-9 in conference action with the pair of victories.

AU will be back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 27) with a doubleheader scheduled against Grand Valley State at Brookside Park. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
