AU
vs. NKU Box Score
Top-seeded Ashland University and
third-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside recorded victories Thursday (May
13) in first round games at the NCAA Division II North Central
Regional Baseball Tournament. This years regional tournament
is being held at AUs Donges Field.
Summaries on Thursdays games can be found
below.
Wisconsin-Parkside 16, Grand Valley State 7
Like an actor who disregards the script and improvises, this game
didnt follow the expected pattern. What figured to be a
pitchers battle turned into a slugfest as the third-seeded
Rangers outlasted the Lakers. The game featured 28 hits, 15 by
Wisconsin-Parkside (41-16).
The teams were tied, 4-4 after one inning.
Wisconsin-Parkside took the lead for good in the top of the fourth
inning, pushing two runs across to take a 6-5 lead. Shortstop
Justin Clarke had the key hit in the inning. His two-run single to
left field off of GVSU starter and loser Jon Micoff (10-3) got the
Rangers the lead. The winners added four more runs in the fifth
and for good measure, scored six times in the top of the ninth
inning.
W-P third baseman Kevin Powell was 3-for-5 with
a double and four RBI. First baseman Adam Brechtl was 3-for-4 and
drove in one run. Left fielder Tim Baum had a double and went
2-for-3 with three RBI. Leadoff hitter Jim Healy belted a grand
slam.
Rangers starter Brandon Kellbach went eight
inning to get the win, improving to 11-2. Kellbach allowed six
runs, all earned, on 12 hits. He walked two and struck out four.
First baseman Scott Allen led the Grand Valley
(39-15) attack, going 3-for-4. Shortstop Ryan Lyster was 2-for-5
and Tim Hudnall came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a triple.
The Lakers were coming off a weekend that saw
them go 3-0 and claim the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference tournament championship in Ashland. Entering Thursdays
game, GVSU had won 26 of 29 games.

Ashland senior Josh Gaub
has been named to the first team, District 4 COSIDA Academic
Team. |
A flash of lightning from Mother Nature halted
play in the middle of the fifth inning. Fifty minutes later a
lightning-like shot off the bat of AU senior catcher Josh Gaub
sent the Eagles past the Norse.
For much of four innings, the host
Eagles (46-13) struggled against NKU starter Derrick Moaves. AU
and NKU (37-24) were tied, 1-1 when a thunderstorm halted play in
the fifth inning. When play resumed after 50 minutes, Moaves left
in favor of Chad Anderson and Gaub hit Andersons first pitch
for a two-run double to put AU in front, 3-1. That would be plenty
of support for junior righthander Cody Castle, who hurled
a complete game three-hitter. The complete game was Castles
eighth of the season. He didnt walk a batter and struck out
four. Castle is 9-4.
AUs first run came home in the fifth on a
double to left field by outfielder David Waters. That
plated second baseman Mark Kahlenberg who had singled. AU
added two runs in the seventh. One came home on a Brandon
Cornell single and Gaub singled to bring Cornell home moments
later.
Ashland finished the game with eight hits. Gaub
was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Waters was 2-for-4. Shaun Erie and
Lewis Jones belted doubles for NKU.
The loss went to Moeves, who fell to 7-4. The
righthander allowed three runs on four hits with two walks and
four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
