The Ashland University baseball team placed four players on the 2004 ABCA/Rawling NCAA Division II All-North Central Region team.

Three of those players repeated as first team all-region selections. That group consists of three seniors – outfielder Brandon Cornell (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson), catcher Josh Gaub (Brunswick, OH) and shortstop Eric McDaniel (Curtice, OH/Owens C.C.). Junior pitcher Cody Castle (Dayton, OH/Sinclair C.C.) is a second team selection. The team is selected by coaches in the region and was announced over the weekend.

Cornell, the 2004 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year, hit a team-high .413 with 10 homers, 10 triples, 14 doubles and 73 RBI. The RBI total is the second highest single-season total in school history. Cornell’s slugging percentage this season was .706. He was 24-of-28 in stolen base attempts.

Gaub hit .411 with six homers and 62 RBI. He had 13 doubles and two triples. A true ironman behind the plate, Gaub played in 61 of Ashland’s 62 games in 2004.

McDaniel moved from third base to shortstop prior to the start of this season. The move didn’t hurt his production as he hit .327 with six homers and 61 RBI. He had 11 doubles and six triples.

Castle went 9-4 with a 3.22 ERA. The righthander had a team-high 79 strikeouts in 103.1 innings. Castle made 16 starts and had eight complete games.

Ashland finished 47-15 and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the sixth straight year.
