Previewing the
Knights |
|
Gannon comes into this weeks game
carrying a 1-1 record. In their opener, the Knights downed
their cross-town rival Mercyhurst, 43-37 in overtime. Last
week, in their first-ever home GLIAC game, Gannon lost to
Grand Valley State, 48-17. The Lakers scored on six of seven
first-half possessions to go in front, 42-17 at halftime.
Gannons do-it-all quarterback, senior
Darmel Whitfield, gave the Lakers some uneasy moments.
Whitfield (5-11, 180) completed 26 of 39 passes for 237 yards
and a touchdown. On the ground, he scampered for 64 yards on
20 carries and a touchdown. Whitfield is first in the GLIAC in
total offense (383.5 ypg.), third in passing (275.5 ypg.),
fifth in rushing (108.0 ypg.) and seventh in pass efficiency
(123.7 rating). Over the first two games, his favorite
receiver has been sophomore Ian Goodberlet (6-1, 180), who has
14 catches for 148 yards. Another wideout to watch is junior
Sam Culberth (6-1, 190), who has nine receptions.
Junior Ron Bailey (5-10, 190) has been the
most productive option on the ground, gaining 81 yards on 22
trips (3.7 ypc.).
Defensive back Eugene Padgett (6-0, 180) is
off to a good start. The senior leads the Knights in tackles
(16). Another defensive back, Kevin Scott (5-10, 175), has 13
tackles and the teams lone interception. Senior outside
linebacker Mitchell Hanlon (6-2, 245) has 11 stops and six
tackles for loss (31 yards). Hanlon is the GLIAC leader in
tackles for loss.
The GU special teams cant be
overlooked. Sophomore kicker Brendan McNicholas (6-4, 175) has
connected on all four of his field goal tries and was the
GLIAC special teams player of the week for the seasons
first week.
Gannons head coach is Bill Elias, whos
in his sixth season in Erie. His best season with the Golden
Knights came last season when Gannon finished 9-1. Elias has a
record of 24-27 on the GU sideline. Before coming to Gannon,
Elias was a long-time assistant coach on the Division I level.
He came to Gannon from LSU (1995-99) where he was the
assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and outside
linebackers coach. |

For years, Ed McBain has written the 87th
Precinct novels. Readers are comfortable with the same cast of
characters in a familiar setting. Same thing goes for John
Sandford and his Lucas Davenport/Prey series.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference prefers to stir the pot and the plot. This week
the conference introduces a new protagonist to AU fans the
Gannon Golden Knights. This is Gannons first year playing
GLIAC football. These two teams could develop an interesting
rivalry, they are just three hours apart and because of geography,
they could find themselves recruiting against each other on a
regular basis in northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania.
Both teams enter this game trying to rebound
from losses at home. Last Saturday night, the Eagles lost their
GLIAC opener to Ferris State at Community Stadium, while Gannon
fell at home to defending NCAA Division II national champion Grand
Valley State.
Sights and Sounds of the Game
All Ashland University football games can be heard live on WNCO
(1340 AM). This is the 12th consecutive year the station has
served as the home of AU football. Sam Renfroe and Bill
Linson will describe all the action.
Ashland Times-Gazette sports editor
Dusty Sloan will make the trip to Erie, PA, to cover this
weeks game. His story will appear in Mondays paper.
The Mansfield News-Journal will have a game account in the Sundays
edition.
For a complete look at AU football, fans are
invited to tune in to the Lee Owens Show. That one-hour program
airs every Wednesday at 7 p.m., on WMFD-TV in Mansfield,
OH. Jeff Allen serves as the host of the Lee Owens Show.
Streaks and Strings
Senior wide receiver Michael Hull (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore)
has caught at least one pass in 27 consecutive games. Hull had
four receptions a week ago against Ferris State.
Senior running back Antwan Hart (Detroit,
MI/Erie C.C.) has rushed for over 100 yards in each of AUs
first two games. Hart rambled for a career-best 159 yards on 22
carries with two touchdowns last week. In the opener at home
against Saint Josephs, he had 101 yards on 13 carries. Hart
is the GLIAC leader in rushing with 260 yards (130.0 ypg.).
The Eagles havent won two of their first
three games since the 2001 season when AU began the year with a
win against Edinboro, a loss to Wayne State and a victory over
Findlay. This is the second of two consecutive road games for AU.
A year ago, Ashland was 1-4 on the road. Over the last two
seasons, the Eagles are 2-8 away from their home turf.
The Series
Ashland and Gannon have played twice before and the Golden Knights
lead the series, 2-0. The last time these two schools met was in
1950 at Gannon and the Golden Knights won, 56-12. The other game
was played in 1949 and the Golden Knights were a 33-13 winner.
Series Quiz
(Answers at bottom of page, click here if
you want them now!)
- Who was Ashlands head coach when the Eagles played
Gannon in 1950?
- Ashlands first meeting with Gannon came in 1949. There
is only one opponent on this years schedule who Ashland
played earlier. Name that institution.
- What is Ashlands alltime record in Erie? (Hint
games against Edinboro dont count).
Eagle Update
Self-inflicted wounds did a lot to hurt the Eagles in last weeks
23-17 overtime setback against Ferris State. The Eagles threw
three interceptions, lost a fumble and missed three field goals.
Those miscues prevented the Eagles from grabbing control of the
game in the early stages. Ashland outgained the visitors from Big
Rapids, MI, 434-370. On the ground, the discrepancy was even
larger, the Eagles had a 231-17 advantage.
The game was tied at halftime, 7-7. AU was in
front, 10-7 after three quarters, but FSU scored 10 fourth-quarter
points to force the extra session. The Bulldogs also scored on
their overtime possession and even though they missed the extra
point, the Eagles couldnt get into the end zone on their
possession. AUs last play resulted in an interception in the
end zone. That gave FSU its third straight win over the Eagles and
dropped the Eagles all-time overtime record to 1-3.
Ashlands first two drives of the game
went into FSU territory, the first to the FSU34, the second to the
FSU10. That first march ended with an interception and the second
trip concluded with a missed three-pointer. Had the Eagles been
able to hit paydirt after those drives, maybe an overtime period
wouldnt have been needed.
The AU offense was fueled by Harts
159 yards. Sophomore quarterback Nick Strance (Willard,
OH) clicked on 19 of 38 passes for 203 yards. Hull and
sophomore wide receiver Brandon Gilmore (Mansfield,
OH/Madison) had four catches each. Junior wide receiver Dalorean
White (Warrensville Heights, OH/Erie C.C.) carried the ball
three times for 49 yards and returned two kickoffs for 57 yards.
Three AU players reached twin digits in
tackles. Freshman defensive back Ronnie Smith (Columbus,
OH/DeSales) was in on 11 stops, all solo. He also had three
pass breakups. Senior safety Aaron OReilly (Columbus,
OH/DeSales) had 10 tackles (nine solo) and a pass breakup.
Sophomore linebacker Allen Lattimore (Dayton, OH/Colonel
White) had 10 tackles (nine solo), three tackles for loss and
a pair of sacks. Senior linebacker Chris Campbell (Newark, OH)
had two interceptions. He returned one theft 59 yards.
Noteworthy
- 10 players had at least one pass reception
last week. Sophomore Jerry Ezell, Jr. (Columbus, OH/South)
caught the first pass of his career and it covered 42 yards.
Senior Jeremy Holland (Olmsted Twp., OH/Olmsted Falls),
in his first season as a wideout after three years as a
quarterback, got his first two receptions.
- Linebackers Lattimore and senior
Devin Conwell (Baltimore, MD/Montgomery C.C.) rank
second and third in the GLIAC in tackles for loss.
- AU has outscored the opposition, 41-7 in
the first half this season. A year ago, Ashland was outscored
over the first two quarters, 109-96. AU has scored 20
first-quarter points this season, a year ago in 11 games the
Eagles scored 32 points in the first quarter.
- Freshman punter Nick McCombs (Bucyrus,
OH/Wynford) is averaging 38.5 ypp. The last time the Eagles
had a punter with that kind of distance was in 2001 when Kurt
Keplinger averaged 39.3 ypp.
- Campbells two interceptions
last week were the first of his career.
The Quotebook
Owens on last weeks game.
We played hard as a team, played
with a lot of heart. We just didnt play very smart at times.
We probably didnt coach real smart. Sometimes I think we
tried to get too much done. Again, we played well enough to win.
They (Ferris State) did a great
job of taking our defensive line and linebackers out of the game.
We were dominating up front early in the game. They couldnt
run the ball against us, but they attacked us where we were weak.
I give Ferris State a lot of credit, they were a well-coached
football team. Their game plan was solid. They did what they had
to do to move the ball against our defense.
Campbell on his first two interceptions.
I just tried to get my
hands up, tuck it and run. I just try to do what I can.
Campbell on bouncing back to play Gannon.
Theres no
carryover. Next week we can go to Gannon and start all over. We
can win.
Wide receivers coach Greg Gillum on the
play of Gilmore.
Im very pleased with the
way hes playing, hes our leading receiver and making
catches at crucial times. The thing I need to see with Brandon is
more consistency, thats what he needs to work on. Hes
really come a long way with his blocking. He worked hard this
summer in the weightroom and thats evident on the football
field. This past week, for the first time, I saw him knocking down
corners and safeties.
Owens on Gannon and quarterback Darmel
Whitfield.
He is a threat to run. They
spread you out and hell run counters, traps and draws. Their
passing game is very quick, its hard to pressure him. Theyll
run quick routes against our young defenders and we have to find
some answers for it.
On Deck
The Eagles will head west to Allendale, MI, next Saturday (Sept.
18, 7 p.m.) for a date with Grand Valley State. |
