The Ashland University baseball team improved its record to 7-0 Saturday (March 5) in Fort Myers, FL, and did it by proving that patience is a virtue and a victory.

The Eagles and the Mansfield Mountaineers were tied, 4-4 heading into the ninth inning. With the bases loaded in the top of the frame, AU’s Ron Oneson and Troy Reeder drew walks to force in a pair of runs. That was the difference in a 6-4 AU victory over a team that’s usually among the elite in the Pennsylvania Conference.

Oneson got credit for the game-winning RBI. He drove in two runs against the Mounties. Sophomore catcher Matt Grewe had the most success offensively for AU, he had a pair of hits. Ashland managed six hits against MU pitching.

Junior righthander Lek Cole earned the victory with 8 1/3 innings of solid work. Cole (1-0) turned the game over to sophomore Josh Davidson in the ninth inning and the righty earned his third save of the season by getting the final two outs. Davidson surrendered one hit and had one strikeout.

Ashland didn’t commit an error and turned a pair of double plays.
