It didn’t all come up all Roses for the Ashland University baseball team on Thursday (March 10) in Fort Myers, FL and that was a good thing.

The Eagles split a doubleheader with Saint Rose Thursday, losing the first game, 6-4 and winning the nightcap, 3-0. Ashland is 11-3 as the spring trip heads into the final days.

Ashland had a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, but couldn’t maintain that advantage. It didn’t’ help matters that the Eagles were guilty of three errors. Starting pitcher Ryan Petrich, a freshman lefty, lasted four innings and allowed four runs. The loss went to Dan McGinnis, who came out of the bullpen to throw two innings. The lefthander allowed two runs on three hits.

Outfielder Allen Ayers and shortstop Jim Barry both went 2-for-3. Sophomore catcher Matt Grewe had a double and drove in two runs.

Junior Lek Cole pitched a complete game two-hitter to get the Eagles back on track in the second game. Cole didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Saint Rose had three baserunners. Two reached on hits and the other via an error.

Ashland had six hits. Most of the attack centered around senior second baseman Adam Wilson, who had a double, a homer and two RBI.
