The Ashland University softball team raised its record to 7-1 Thursday night (March 10) with a pair of wins in Florida.

The Eagles had to play eight innings to get the better of C.W. Post, 3-2. Ashland followed that up with a 4-1 verdict over Great Lakes Valley Conference entrant Bellarmine.

Against C.W. Post, sophomore Bree Beabout singled in Michelle Congrove to produce the winning run. Beabout’s hit came with two outs. Freshman infielder Danielle Rychener had singled in a run to force the tie.

“It seems like every day we have somebody new getting a hit in the clutch,” exclaimed AU head coach Sheilah Gulas.

AU’s leading hitter against C.W. Post was catcher Nicole Placie, who banged out two hits in three trips to the plate.

Jaime Williams earned the win in relief of Sarah Holets. Holets lasted five innings and gave up a run on three hits. Williams worked three frames and permitted a run on three hits. Both pitchers had four strikeouts.

Against Bellarmine, Williams fired a complete-game, two-hitter. She whiffed 10 batters. Freshman Amanda Thomas was 1-for-2 with an RBI double and Placie was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs.

“Nicole Placie is just out of her mind,” praised Gulas. “She’s been incredible. She’s come through in a lot of clutch situations.”
