Automobile owners know how fast rust can appear. Ashland University baseball coach John Schaly realizes how fast it can spread on a baseball team, too.

The Eagles returned to the field for the first time since their Florida trip on Tuesday (March 29), playing Notre Dame College in Strongsville, OH. Ashland divided a doubleheader with NDC, losing the first game, 1-0 and winning the second contest, 9-4. The Eagles are 14-5 heading into today’s twinbill against West Liberty. NDC is 8-12-1.

Both teams had just one hit in the first game. NDC scored the game’s lone run in the fourth inning. Todd Lehmer led off with a single and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Lehmer came around to score on a bunt by shortstop Dustin Taulbee.

Sophomore Josh Davidson (2-2) took the loss. He allowed one hit in six innings. Davidson struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. The win went to Matt Kidd, who went seven innings and walked one and whiffed five.

Designated hitter Ray Frisbee had a fifth-inning single for AU’s lone hit.

Ashland rapped out eighth hits in the second game. Troy Reeder was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. Allen Ayers was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. First baseman Ron Oneson had AU’s other extra-base hit, he ripped a double.

Lek Cole went six innings for the win. He allowed a run on four hits and didn’t walk a batter. Cole struck out four in improving his record to 3-0. Dan McGinnis got two outs in the seventh inning and Matt Patton recorded the final out.
