Eagles Baseball Team Splits at Northern Kentucky

The Ashland University baseball team divided a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky Tuesday (April 5). The Eagles lost the first game, 6-4 and won the second affair, 5-2.

Senior righty Todd Martinelli endured a rough outing in the first game. Martinelli went 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits. Two of the runs were unearned. Martinelli (2-2) didn’t have a walk or strikeout. He was relieved by Todd Wells, who gave up a run in 2 2/3 innings.

The Norse got to Martinelli for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. AU pushed two runs across home plate in the second and NKU took the lead for good with three runs in the third. Alex Frank, Matt Wagers and Conor McGeehan each homered and drove in two runs for NKU (8-8).

The Eagles (17-6) got two hits apiece from Casey Jirsa; and Troy Reeder. Both of Reeder’s hits were doubles. Jirsa drove in three runs.

Matt Marskbury went the distance for the win. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three. Marksbury allowed six hits in raising his record to 3-0.

David Waters had a pair of singles to pace the Eagles in the second game. There were no extra-base knocks in this game. Ashland scored four times in the fourth and added a run in the fifth. NKU got started late, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan Petrich went 6 1/3 innings to up his record to 4-0. Petrich gave up two runs, both earned, on two hits. He walked three and struck out eight. Josh Davidson got the final two outs for his fourth save.

Davidson also drove in two runs.

Kevin Quick (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He allowed five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Eagles will try to play their first two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games of the year when they visit Hillsdale on Wednesday (April 6, 2 p.m.).
